For me, a cellar is a form of grid, a repetitive and utilitarian structure. From a geometric pattern that I drew and imagined in volume, I intervened in a simple way on the structure of the cellar, subtracting the elements of its composition. The sequencing principle is thus disturbed by a deconstruction up to the total degradation of the pattern, which is that of the cellar. From these full and empty spaces results in a complex and light binary frame in which the bottles will be displayed in a gradually decreasing sequence.

The artist

Frédéric Cordier is a Swiss-Canadian artist born in Montreal in 1985. His work revolves around the notion of systems, to which he associates the idea of dysfunctionality. His formal research explores the elementary components of a visual language rooted in rhythm, contrast, and repetition — playing with the balance between full and void, black and white. Through large-scale prints, sculpture, and architectural installation, Cordier develops a distinctive graphic vocabulary marked by precision and tension.

His recent solo exhibitions include Mécanique du paysage (2026, Musée Jenisch Vevey), Drill Baby! (2026, URDLA Lyon), and Night Views (2023, Montreal). In 2023, he published a major monograph covering his work from 2010 to 2022. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Hantologie / Anthologie #2 (2024, Saint-Étienne, France), Swiss Art Awards 2019 (Messe Basel, Hall 3, Basel), Rien que pour vos yeux #2 – Les plus belles estampes des collections (2019, Musée Jenisch, Vevey), Vendu–Sold (2019, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Pavillon Jean-Noël Desmarais), and Art Toronto (2019, Galerie Laroche/Joncas, Toronto). His work is held in several public and private collections in Switzerland, France, and Canada.
